This lovely viola (LOB 401mm approx. 15 3/4 inches) is modelled on one made by Paulus Castello of Genoa (1774). It has a sumptuous sound with a deep and even sonority from top to bottom and feels very comfortable in the hands owing to its modest size and slender neck.
We had the original viola at the workshop and made very complete documentation of it, and this is the third copy we have made. The photographs show the highly unusual purfling with an extra black strip. The back of the instrument is in one piece of slab cut maple with small ripple sloping slightly upwards from the treble to the bass side. The grafted scroll shows feint figure and the button has an ebony crown. The belly is of broad straight grained spruce and the varnish, showing extensive wear, is of a dark red brown colour over a rich golden ground.
Currently available to try, we would be happy to courier this viola to you for a trial period. Please call the workshop on 01969 624643 for more information.
