How I make an instrument for you
Antique instruments have held a fascination for me all my life, their richness of sound is complimented by the complexity of their appearance, and I have never passed up an opportunity to make a close study of one. I have spent my life being inspired by and copying these old beauties, striving always to emulate the glorious beauty and magic that they display.

Experience has shown me that new 'copies' are often a sensible alternative when old ones may be damaged, visibly or less so, or just monstrously expensive! For security, a faithful copy can be an extremely attractive idea.

My ambition has always been to make instruments which sound and respond like mature examples, but which are unashamedly new, with all of the benefits this brings, for example: security of knowing who made it, no unexpected repairs, and the sound you are looking for.

I borrow recordings of performances which are especially dear to my client and by listening carefully ‘into the sound’ on very revealing loud speakers it is possible to glean a lot of information about the instrument, such as the volume of air inside and clues about the stiffness and hardness of the plates, an understanding which can be a huge help during the making.
Agreements and Arrangements
Exact copies will inevitably cost a little more than those built on regular patterns which I have made before.
The whole project will be agreed between myself and my client before any work is undertaken.
I ask for a 15% deposit at the outset of any project to cover materials and we make an arrangement to suit both parties regarding the remaining costs.

IF YOU CAN'T WAIT!
There are usually one or two finished instruments at the workshop for those who wish to try my work or circumvent the waiting list. These instruments can be played in the workshop or elsewhere by arrangement.
